Rudolf Bernoulli was a Swiss art historian and professor at the ETH, Zurich. He delivered a two-part lecture at the second Eranos Lectures, in 1934 titled “On the Symbolism of Geometric Figures and Numbers” that included a discussion of numerology in connection with the Tarot.

Jung mentioned the lectures in one of his few written references to Tarot, writing in “The Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious, “… It … seems as if the set of pictures in the Tarot cards were distantly descended from the archetypes of transformation, a view that has been confirmed for me in a very enlightening lecture by professor [Rudolph] Bernoulli.” Links to both lectures appear below, in a new translation.
